It’s frustrating to change your lifestyle habits and not see the weight loss results you were hoping for. If this sounds like you, perhaps you’ve considered trying out the keto diet in order to lose weight. There are a lot of people who have found success with this diet that consists of limiting your carbs and increasing your fat intake so that your body starts to burn fat (ketones), instead of carbohydrates. Although it can take around three weeks for your body to go into ketosis, once it does, you’ll hopefully notice the pounds starting to drop.

The traditional keto diet was typically 75/20/5 ratio of fat/protein/carbs, however, there are other less restrictive versions of the keto diet that are a little easier to maintain in the long run. Keto 2.0 is a great example of a plan that’s similar to the Mediterranean diet that has a ratio of 50/30/20 or even 40/40/20 of fat/protein/carbs. These ratios are easier to manage for a lot of people who are interested in staying on this type of diet for the long term.

The benefits of trying out the keto diet (in any of its iterations) include:

  • Decrease your appetite. One of the most difficult parts of sticking to a diet that reduces your daily caloric intake is that you feel hungry. When you’re hungry, it’s hard to concentrate on your daily tasks, and you run the increased risk of breaking your diet to snack on something unhealthy. When you’re on the keto diet, you’re eating foods that are higher in fat and protein, which are digested slower. This can leave you feeling fuller for longer so you’re able to make it to your next meal. You may also find that when consuming higher amounts of fat and protein, it takes less to fill you up.
  • Initial weight loss. One of the biggest draws of the keto diet is that people experience a jump start in their weight loss once they change their diet to include more fats and protein, and reduce the carbs. Low carb diets help rid the body of excess water, which is why during the first few weeks you can notice a significant change in weight. Then as the body adapts to ketosis and starts to burn fat, you may continue to see additional weight loss.
  • Triglyceride levels drop. Triglycerides are the fat molecules that are in your blood stream, and high levels of them could indicate an increased risk of heart disease. There are studies that show when people adopt a high fat/low carb diet, they experience a drop in triglyceride levels.
  • Improves cholesterol levels. Adopting a high fat diet like keto means you could improve your good cholesterol levels (HDL) and lower your bad cholesterol (LDL). One of the best ways to improve your HDL numbers is to eat more high fat foods, which is exactly what you’ll do while on the keto diet.

While it may seem intimidating at first, the keto diet gives you the opportunity to eat a variety of foods. It’s hard for folks to cut out carbs completely from their diet, which is why perhaps doing one of the less restrictive versions of keto could be right for you. While on keto, you can expect to enjoy foods like:

  • Red meat
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Avocados
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Nuts
  • Salmon
  • Salad greens
  • Peppers
  • Olives
  • Protein shakes

While the keto diet does offer plenty of benefits, you should also be aware of some of the downsides. Since you’re cutting out a majority of carbs, you may find it hard to get the necessary amount of fiber in your diet, which could lead to constipation. Having to plan meals and count calories can also distort your relationship with food, and take away the joy that comes from cooking and eating your meals.

You may also find that this type of diet is hard for you to sustain in the long term, since it does mean eliminating certain foods from your diet. When you come off of it, you may experience some weight gain back.

Yes, you can definitely include weight loss shakes into your routine while you’re on the keto diet. The trick is to ensure that they’re keto-friendly first. Swapping out a meal with a protein shake is a great way to ensure you’re getting the nutrients you need, but without the extra calories and carbs. You can always control the portion size when it comes to protein shakes, and you know exactly how much of everything you’re taking in. Do some research and search for shakes that are designed to be included in a keto diet, this way, you won’t have to worry about going over your carb or sugar limit.

Typically keto-friendly shakes won’t have any more than 7-8 grams of carbs. You should also look out for added sugar, and ensure that there aren't too many calories. After all, you’re trying to reduce your overall caloric intake and still need to get most of your calories from high fat foods.

Keto-friendly shakes can help you reach your weight loss goals because they offer you a convenient way to nourish your body with vitamins and minerals, but still help you adhere to your diet plan. Plus, there are all kinds of shakes out there that come in a variety of yummy flavors, so you’re never going to get bored! Additionally, they make great snacks if you find yourself having a hard time making it to your next meal.
