What is the keto diet?

Let’s discuss what the keto diet is, and if it’s right for you

The keto diet is a popular diet if you’re looking to reach your weight loss goals in a healthy way. It focuses on eliminating (or limiting) certain foods from your diet, and incorporating other foods instead. With the keto diet, you can expect to consume a very low amount of carbohydrates, while ramping up your consumption of fats. You will eat very little high carbohydrate foods such as bread, crackers, pasta, and cereal, and instead focus on foods that have a high fat content, such as nuts, meat, and eggs. This is very similar to the Atkins diet that focused on eliminating carbs from meals and snacks.

When your body is deprived of carbohydrates, it enters ketosis, and becomes very good at burning energy in the form of fat. In addition to helping you drop some pounds, going on the keto diet may actually help with your insulin levels and blood sugar levels.

While this diet may seem a little intimidating at first, you have options with this diet, so you can try each one out and see which one works best for you.

  • Standard keto diet. If you want to follow the standard keto diet, you’ll need to make sure you’re consuming no more than 10% of carbs throughout your day. The bulk of your meals and snacks should be moderate in protein, and high in fats, which works out to 70% fat and 20% protein.
  • Cyclical keto diet. You can also choose to incorporate the keto diet on a cyclical basis, having days where you follow the high fat low carb protocol, and other days where you don’t. A good example of the cyclical keto diet is to have five days of following the keto diet, and then two days where you incorporate more carbs.
  • Targeted keto diet. If you’re also interested in kicking your exercising game into high gear and also maintain the keto diet, you may want to try out the targeted keto diet. This allows you to have carbs when you’re working out. If you know you have an intense workout planned, you can incorporate carbs before or afterwards to help give your body the fuel it needs.
  • A high protein keto diet. The high protein keto diet is for folks who want to get more protein into their diet, but still follow the keto guidelines. You will have even less carbs throughout your day (about 5%), and include 60% fats and 35% protein.

It may take a little while to get used to your new diet, but your body will eventually enter into ketosis and you’ll start to see the weight come off. People who follow this diet also like to practice intermittent fasting, which means they limit the hours where they can consume food to about eight hours per day, and then fasting for the remaining 16. This is not only a great way to lose weight, but it also gives you specific times when you can eat your meals and snacks, and helps you stay accountable to your new diet!

Avocado chips

  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 3/4 c. freshly grated Parmesan
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

If you’re an avocado lover (and who isn’t?) this recipe is for you. All you need to do is get your avocados and preheat the oven to 325. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and then mash up your fruit in a bowl. Add in the cheese, lemon juice, and seasonings. Then scoop the mixture onto the baking sheet, leaving about 3 inches between each scoop. Flatten them and put them into the oven to bake for around 30 minutes. Allow them to cool completely before enjoying!

Keto burger fat bombs

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp. cold butter, cut into 20 pieces
  • 2 oz. cheddar, cut into 20 pieces
  • Lettuce leaves, thinly sliced tomatoes, and mustard for serving

In order to stick to the keto diet and allow your body to enter ketosis, you’re going to be eating a lot of meat and fats. These keto burger fat bombs are sure to satisfy your craving for beef and keep you full in between meals! Preheat your oven to 375 and grease a muffin tin. Combine the beef, garlic powder, and seasonings in a bowl. Then just press a scoop of the meat mixture into each of the muffin tin cups. Place a piece of butter and cover with another scoop of the meat mixture. Then place a piece of cheddar cheese on top and cover with another scoop of meat mixture. Bake for around 15 minutes and allow to cool a little before trying!
