While choosing to lose weight is great for your overall health, it’s important to make sure you discuss any major changes to your diet (like starting a keto diet) with your doctor or healthcare provider. Lots of folks have been successful at losing weight while on the keto diet, but it is a fairly restrictive diet, so you should make sure before you start that this is okay based on your medical history.

The keto diet is what is known as a carb restricting diet, which means that you’re getting the majority of your calories from protein and fat sources. The original keto diet follows a macro ratio of 75/20/5 of fats/protein/carbs, but there are other variations that allow a little more wiggle room so you can include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Ratios for keto 2.0 diets are closer to 50/30/20 of fats/proteins/carbs and give you a much more balanced diet than the traditional keto. 

Regardless of which type of keto diet you decide to follow, the goal is the same—to get your body into a state of ketosis. This is the bodily process that increases the production of ketones, which can be used as an energy source. Normally, our bodies use glucose as the primary source of energy, but when you’re restricting your carbs, you simply don’t have the glucose reserves to burn for energy, so the body switches to using ketones instead. 

So what are some of the benefits you can expect from going on a keto diet?

  • Weight loss. One of the biggest benefits of trying out a keto diet is that it can lead to weight loss. Restricting carbs is one of the best ways to lose weight quickly, not only because you’re decreasing the amount of calories you consume daily, but because doing so can get rid of excess water in the body. This type of rapid weight loss is typical for the first 1-2 weeks you’re on this type of diet. Keeping your body in a state of ketosis can also lead to additional weight loss, especially around the abdomen. It’s essential that while you’re on this diet you continue to stay physically active if you have a specific weight loss goal you’d like to reach. 
  • Decreased appetite. Although it may be difficult at first to cut out the majority of carbs from your diet, as you include more protein and fat, you’ll find that you feel full without having to eat as much. This is because your body digests protein more slowly, and it takes more calories to digest protein and fat than it does carbs, which is known as the thermic effect of food. Protein will keep you fuller for longer periods of time, so you won’t always be hungry and craving what’s missing from your diet—carbs. When you eat less calories throughout the day, you will get the weight loss results you’re looking for.
  • Lower triglycerides and bad cholesterol. In addition to helping you reach your weight loss goals, a keto diet can also lower your triglyceride level and your LDL cholesterol. Cutting carbs leads to an automatic reduction in the simple sugar fructose, which can lead to high levels of triglycerides and may increase your risk of heart disease. Keto diets can help lower bad cholesterol, and they can also help increase your HDL (good) cholesterol levels as well. 
  • Lower blood sugar. Diets low in carbs like keto can also help better regulate blood sugar levels and insulin levels. With less carbs and sugar in your diet, if you have diabetes, you may find that you need to reduce your insulin levels or may not need glucose-lowering medication. If you’re a diabetic, make sure to discuss trying out keto with your doctor.

All of these sound like great reasons to try out the keto diet if you want to lose weight, however, it’s important to be aware of some of the potential downsides:

  • The keto diet can be difficult to maintain over the long term
  • Depending on the variety of keto you try, eliminating foods like fruits and vegetables and fiber-rich whole grains can lead to nutrient deficiencies 
  • You can become disconnected from your relationship with food

However, if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages to you, then perhaps this is just the regimen you need to jump start your weight loss.

Types of foods to eat while on keto

It can feel a little overwhelming when you’re first starting out on your keto diet—what can and what can’t you eat? In our Western diet, carbs and sugars sneak their way into a lot of our foods, so it’s super important that you start reading labels and stick to whole foods as much as possible. Because the keto diet is so popular, lots of grocery stores may have a low-carb section where you’ll find low carb substitutes for items, or keto-friendly options specifically made for those restricting carbs. 

Here are some of the top foods you should include in your keto-friendly routine:

  • Lots of meats like poultry, beef, pork, and lamb
  • Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, catfish, and cod
  • Eggs
  • Avocados
  • High fat condiments like mayonnaise, oil, lard, and cream
  • High fat dairy
  • Nuts and nut butters
  • Berries in moderation
  • Coffee and tea 

Are there snacks that are keto-friendly? 

Yes! There are lots of keto-friendly snacks out there. You can check out your local grocery store for all kinds of options when it comes to dupes of your favorite snacks like chips, pretzels, popcorn, and even keto-friendly cookies. Just make sure you’re including these types of snacks in your diet in moderation.
