Snackergy Lowered Sodium Jerky for Bariatrics: Dietitian Review

May 1, 2017 by Diet Direct Leave a Comment

This review was provided by bariatric nutrition counselor Sharon Howard R.D., M.S., C.D.E., L.D.N., F.A.D.A., the owner of Nutrition for Living.

After months of protein shakes, pureed foods and soft snacks, as a bariatric patient, you might be hankerin’ for a chewy protein snack. Here is a new low fat,  light in sodium beef jerky to sink your teeth into. With only 190 mg of sodium per ounce, this gusto snack surely beats the higher-salt marketplace alternatives at 627 grams sodium!

About the same amount of protein per oz (10 grams), the New Snackery Beef Jerky is also much lower in fat by a whole teaspoon (5 grams) and has 36 fewer calories .

But, you must take caution in eating such a dense, chewy protein item. Remember, you must not drink liquids 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after eating.  You may find your stomach has an uncomfortable “lump”  of dried meat product gnawing to be digested.

Gastric bypass patients should not use this item. It contains 11 grams of sugar, which breaks the general rule of 6 grams of added sugar per serving. You most likely will get a dumping response. There is a generous amount of brown sugar, honey and apple juice in the product, which would only draw fluid to your stomach and cause problems. In this product’s development, the fat content was lowered, but some sugar added for flavor and preservative power.  So, sorry folks, this item is not for every body who has had stomach altering weight loss surgery.
